Only in Compressor Edge

Stable Compressor is fast and reliable. Edge adds power-user features for batch workflows and advanced control — all built on the same native Media3 hardware encoder. Explore the Compressor Edge repository on GitHub for source, changelog and issues.

Video Queue — Batch Compression

Queue multiple videos and compress them back-to-back without babysitting the app. Perfect for creators batching social clips, camera rolls, or screen recordings.

Available only in Compressor Edge.

Background Compression

Start a compression and switch apps — Edge keeps encoding in the background with Live Activities. On Android 16+ it even continues with screen off.

Hardware-accelerated, same speed as Compressor, now without needing the app in foreground.

Enable All Codecs

Unlock hidden encoders on your device from Settings. Force expose H.265, AV1 or other codecs for testing — even if the OS hides them by default.

Audio Encoding Selection

Choose your audio encoder — control how sound is handled during transcodes instead of relying on a single default. More control, same lightning-fast pipeline.

Stable vs Edge — which should you use?

Use Compressor if you want maximum stability, broadest device support (Android 7.0+), and a polished experience on Google Play and IzzyOnDroid. Use Compressor Edge if you want earliest access to new features and don't mind occasional experiments. Both are free, MIT licensed, ad-free and offline — built by JoshAtticus.

Ready for the bleeding edge?

Download Compressor Edge APK from GitHub Releases. No Play Store required — just install and go. Always free and open-source.

Compressor Edge FAQ

Quick answers about the experimental build. For the stable app, see Compressor FAQ.

What is Compressor Edge?
Compressor Edge is the bleeding edge build of Compressor. It ships features & fixes that haven't landed in stable yet, with no fixed release schedule — stable Compressor always takes priority.
How is Edge different from stable Compressor?
Edge exclusively has: Video Queue (batch), Background Compression with Live Activities & screen-off on Android 16+, Enable All Codecs toggle, and Audio Encoding Selection. Otherwise it's the same lightning-fast native Media3 hardware encoder, ad-free and offline.
Is Edge stable? Should I daily-drive it?
Edge is experimental and may have unfinished features or regressions. If you value stability, stay on Compressor from Google Play or IzzyOnDroid. If you love testing new things early, Edge is for you.
What are the requirements?
Edge release 2+ requires Android 8.0 or later. Stable Compressor still supports Android 7.0+. Both are under 20MB, no internet permission, process 100% on-device.
How do I install Edge?
Grab the APK from GitHub Releases, open it on your Android device and allow install from your file manager / browser when prompted. You can keep stable Compressor installed alongside Edge.
Will Edge come to Google Play?
Not currently — Edge is distributed via GitHub to iterate fast without store review. Stable Compressor remains on Google Play and IzzyOnDroid. Star the Edge repo to help it get discovered.
How can I request features or report bugs for Edge?
Open an issue on CompressorEdge on GitHub — that's preferred. Or email [email protected]. Please note development is part-time and free, so responses may take up to 3 weeks.
